Why Plantar Fasciitis Hurts the Way It Does

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue running from your heel bone to your toes. Repetitive load — running, standing all day, sudden weight gain, weak hips, tight calves — irritates and microtears the fascia. The body tries to repair, then you sleep with the foot relaxed, then those first steps re-tear the healing tissue. That's why morning steps hurt the most.

It rarely resolves with rest alone. Without addressing the load and the tissue quality, it can become chronic — months or years of dialed-down activity, custom orthotics that only help a little, and the temptation to consider injections or surgery.

Common Symptoms We See

  • Sharp heel pain in the first steps of the morning
  • Pain that eases as you warm up, returns after rest
  • Tenderness on the inside-front of the heel bone
  • Pain that worsens with long standing or barefoot walking
  • Tight calves, especially on the involved side
  • Pain that intensifies when climbing stairs
  • Symptoms that have lasted more than 6 weeks
  • Compensation pain in the knee, hip, or low back

The Shockwave + Mechanics Approach

We're currently the only practice in Central Louisiana running the Chattanooga Intelect RPW 2 — a Radial Pressure Wave Therapy system that drives focused mechanical waves into the irritated fascia. This increases blood flow, breaks up scar tissue, and triggers the body's own repair process.

Sessions are 10–15 minutes, feel like a strong tapping, and require no downtime. Most patients notice meaningful relief after 3–6 sessions spaced a week apart. Individual results vary.

Shockwave alone often isn't enough. We pair it with chiropractic adjustments for the foot, ankle, and pelvis, dry needling for the calf trigger points that pull on the fascia, and a targeted rehab plan for the hip and calf mechanics that drove it in the first place.
